始めてのUbuntuの導入のため、
何もデータの入ってない古いHDDにインストールしたのですが起動することができません
(Windowsとのデュアルブートを試しましたが失敗したため
WndowsをインストールしてあるHDDは取り外した状態でインストールしなおしました)

ここを参考に「boot=casper」を「root=/dev/sda1」に書き直しての起動は問題ありません
しかし、HDDから直接起動しようとすると、BIOS上で
「DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.」が表示され起動が失敗します
かなり古いHDDを引っ張り出して来たので、ハードの問題の可能性も否定できません
