ubuntu 12.04 においてデスクトップエフェクトが動作しません。

Unity
「System Settings > Details > Graphics == unkown」

KDE (kubuntu-fullパッケージを入れました)
「System Settings > Desktop Effect > Advanced > Compositing type == openGL」とすると「The following desktop effects could not be activated. / Blur / Cover switch / Desktop cube」

グラフィックボード（チップセット）を認識していないようなのですが、対処方法を知っている方いらっしゃいましたらお教えください。
過去に Linux Mint 12 KDE を入れた時も同じ問題に遭遇して XRender で使っていました。一方 openSUSE 12.1 KDE を使っていたときは openGL でも動いていました。

使っているパソコンは VAIO type Z, VGN-Z92DS です（Intel GM45 Chipset と nVidia GeForce 9300M GS が入っています）。

もう一度クリーンインストールしてみました。

Live CD (ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso) で起動するとウインドウの影などのエフェクトが正常に動作していました。
このとき Unity は「System Settings > Details > Graphics == unkown」です。なお /etc/X11/xorg.conf は存在しませんでした。
しかし、いざ HDD にインストールするとウインドウやパネルの影もないフラットな表示になってしまいます。Firefox の 3D インスペクタも使えませんでしたし、Terminal も不透明です。

以前同じPCに ubuntu 10.10 を導入したときは正常でしたし、ドライバが未対応というわけではないと思います。
ただ、他のディストリ openSUSE 12.1 で正常で、 Linux Mint 12 でダメだった過去を考えると、ubuntu 系特有のなにかが関連しているような気がします。

おそらく情報が少ないために具体的な回答ができないと思うので、少し質問を変えてみます。
1) Live CD で試した時には正常で、インストールすると認識されないケースってあるのでしょうか？
2) こういったトラブルに対し、まず疑うべきはどこで、何をすべきなのでしょうか？

自分の知識不足で十分な情報を提供できず申し訳ありません :| よろしくお願いいたします。
