ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Eigo de kaite moushiwakegozaimasen.

I am having problem to install the ISDN modem Aterm IT21L in USB on my Dapper Drake.

I leave in Kobuchizawa, Yamanashiken, and the only internet access available is ISDN at 64kbps.

I have installed the modem on my XP but I really need to use Ubuntu !

So I have 2 problems:
1 - When I use Ubuntu the modem doesn't seem to be recognized (no red light on)

2 - I went through System->Administration->Network to setup the connexion but I don't know how to go further than that when the modem will be recognized..

I would be very grateful if someone could help me ?

Osewani narimasu.

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

It might not go well...

1) install gnome-ppp
sudo aptitude install gnome-ppp

2) execute gnome-ppp
sudo gnome-ppp

3) setup
Click [Setup] button. and click "Detect". If gnome-ppp not detect automatic,
please check your dmesg output(/var/log/dmesg).

4) change device type
"Type:" combobox require "USB Modem" or "IDSN Modem",
but I dont know ATerm's device type.
Please test both settings.

5) fill ISP settings
fill "Username", "Password", "Phone number".

6) test
Click [Connect] button.

When you cant connect, please paset your "Connection Log".

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Dear hito,

I have followed your instructions and installed gnome-ppp.
When I go in gnome-ppp and try to detect either a regular modem, USB modem or ISDN modem, nothing is detected...

Althought the Aterm is detected as an USB device (as shown in lsusb) it apparently is not recognized as a modem...

Here is my /var/log/dmesg/ and it does not show the Aterm at all... :(

Since with lsusb we know where my modem is do you think there is a way to force Ubuntu to recognized an USB device as an ISDN modem ?

Thank you very much for your help !

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Dear Aomapesu,

lsusb said:

コード:

      bInterfaceClass 255 Vendor Specific Class

and, dmesg does not detect ATerm, so I think that this is the "winmodem" in USB-mode.
It require vendor specific driver. But I cant found it.

Since with lsusb we know where my modem is do you think there is a way to force Ubuntu to recognized
an USB device as an ISDN modem ?

I think that it is impossible or too dificulty.

However, this modem has RS-232C port, it is generic device(maybe).
http://121ware.com/product/atermstation/product/terminal/it31l/index.html

Please test with RS-232C port....

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Hito you really are great.

The modem is detected in RS-232C port as shown by a magnificent green light next to the "ready" sign on the Aterm.

BUT it still cannot connect to the internet although I have specified correctly my ISP settings

Here is how it goes under gnome-ppp:

GNOME PPP: STDERR: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
GNOME PPP: STDERR: ERROR
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Bad init string.

One weird thing though it keeps detecting the modem as a regular one and does not take it as an ISDN device.

And although we see that in the detecting process it comes to an error in the following line

GNOME PPP: STDERR: ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- ERROR

it is surprising that it still tries to send that particular string to the modem rather than sending the seemingly safe one

GNOME PPP: STDERR: ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2

without the +FCLASS ending...

I am very grateful to you for all the effort you put in here. Hopefully we will get through it soon !

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Konbanha...

I finally found how to change the init chain in gnome-ppp (parameters->Init Chain) back to the one that can initialize the Aterm.

The problem know is that I can not connect to the internet.
It tells me that there is an "Invalid dial command":

コード:

WVCONF: /root/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: Connexion en cours...
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.55
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Initializing modem.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Sending: ATZ
GNOME PPP: STDERR: ATZ
GNOME PPP: STDERR: OK
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2
GNOME PPP: STDERR: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2
GNOME PPP: STDERR: OK
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Modem initialized.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Sending: AT1492
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Waiting for carrier.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: AT1492
GNOME PPP: STDERR: ERROR
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Invalid dial command.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Disconnecting at Wed Sep 6 03:24:49 2007

1492 is the correct phone number that has been given to me by my ISP and it is the number that is getting me on the internet through windows...

If you have any idea how to solve that problem, I would be glad to read from you.

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Dear Aomapesu

I guess that this is AT commands problem.

The Aterm said "Invalid dial command", because it could not understood
generic AT commands. We have to send valid specified commands.

Can you check your TA's manuals or CD-ROMs?
If you found a AT commands commandset lists, please input them.

When you cant find these items, please wait several days, I'l seek
ATerm's AT commands in vendor's web page (I found manual PDF.
But Im in busy, so it is not possible to promise...).

Re: ISDN modem Aterm IT21 L installation help needed

Hito san,

I think I found the AT command for this modem BUT a NEW problem arose ... :(

As you can see from this connection log (here with gnome-ppp):

コード:

~$ sudo gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /root/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: Connexion en cours...
GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Ignoring malformed input line: ";Do NOT edit this file by hand!"

GNOME PPP: STDERR: --> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd man pages for more information.

and here with wvdial:

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.55

--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
--> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd man pages for more information.

It connects and then hangs up almost immediately (exit code=16).

I also noticed that every time I use gnome-ppp it changes my /root/.wvdial.conf file and inputs some corrupted data (it changes my ATDT setting to AT, it turns the modem password on from off, and it erases my login password). This is not too bothering a problem though and I think I could live with this tiny hassle as long as I could get to the internet with my dapper.

Is there a way to record or to see the exchange going on between my Aterm and the ISP while connecting under Windows ? I think that would be most useful don't you think ?

I here again thank you for the time and effort you are investing in this problem.

O sewa ni narimashita.
