今インストールCDから起動して投稿してます。
夕方起動するとcuiでしか起動しなくなってしまいました。
昼にアップデートの通知があり、実行したのですが、その中にnvidiaドライバのアップデートも含まれてました。
なので、私は更新ドライバが合わないのではないかと考えてます。
そこでこのまま、もしくはcui起動でドライバを古いのに戻す方法はないでしょうか？
当たり前なんでしょうが、今の状態で「追加のドライバー」を実行しても選択肢はありません。
どなたかアドバイスをいただけると助かります。よろしくお願いします。

もちろん、原因は違うと思いますといった情報でもかまいません。

長々すみません。
リカバリーモードで起動してメニューからfailsafeXで起動しても同じくcuiになります。
failsafeX起動中に流れるテキストを素人解釈（数秒でメニューに戻ってしまう）すると
ドライバ304.88から304.108に変わったのがダメなので、元のドライバに戻してください。
http://wiki.x.org（接続できません）も参照してください。
エラーログは/var/log/xorg.failsafe.logです。

ハードウェア構成はフッターに書いてあるのもので良いのでしょうか?

ひとまず、オンボードのグラフィック機能を試してみてはいかがでしょうか?
(もうお試しだったり、装備されてないのかも知れませんが)

あるいは、ログを読む限り、カーネルモジュールの更新がかかったのが原因のようですから、
GRUBから古いカーネルを指定してみて、起動を試してみるとかどうでしょう。

返事遅れまして申し訳ありません。
構成は書いてる通りです。とりあえず解決しました。
やはり古いドライバにしたら問題なく起動しました（しばらくどうすればいいかわからずパニックになってました）
インストールCDで起動してたので、ドライバをダウンロードし、起動HDDに移せばいいんだろうと考え付き
ダウンロードしたまではよかったのですが、権限がなくHDに移せませんでした。
マウント云々のコマンドはよくわからなかったので、これは諦めました。
次にボードを抜いて起動すればいいんだと考えたところ、確かに起動できました。
こちらは権限は問題ないので、ドライバ（304.88）をダウンロード、usa.runに名前を変更（打つのが楽なように）、
ホーム（cui起動時はホームなので）に移動してシャットダウン、ボードを挿してcui起動、
事前に調べておいたコマンドを打ちました。
$ sudo apt-get remove nvidia-current
$ sudo sh usa.run
このあと再起動で、いつもの画面に戻りました。
ドライバは消さずにホームに残しておいてます。

冷静になって考えてれば、質問するまでもなかったことかもしれませんが・・・
冷静になれないもんですね^^;

やったことを１つ書き忘れました。
次アップデートがあったら、また同じ症状になるのではないかと思ってたら、
synapticでバージョン固定なるものが、できることがわかり
304.88で検索
パッケージ→バージョンを固定
これで本当にアップデート通知がなければ、いいんですけどね・・・
