初期設定では非表示になっているようですね。
設定ファイルを書き換えるとリカバリーモードが表示されました。
以下は、私が確認した手順です。

1.
まず管理者権限で /etc/default/grub を開きます。
例：gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

2.
#GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"

と書かれた行の下に、

GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="false"

という一行を書き加えて保存します。

3.
端末で、

sudo update-grub

と実行した後、再起動します。

4.
Shiftキーを押しっぱなしにしておくとブートメニューが表示されるので、

Advanced options for Ubuntu

を選択してEnterキーを押します。

5.
一覧にrecovery modeが加わっています。

どこから送信されるのでしょうか。
転送ソフトから自分宛のメールが送信されるとしても、ループが発生するとはあまり考えられないのですが。
