はじめまして。
Siriusと申します。

下記のマシンにubuntu7.10をLive CDよりインストールしようと試みましたが、
Login画面の描画時にフリーズしてしまいました。
キーボードからのCtrl-Alt-Deleteも受け付けませんでした。

メモリの問題かと思い、Alternate版でインストールを試みました。
Alternate版ではインストールできたのですが、
再起動するとやはりLogin画面でフリーズしてしまいました。
今回もキーボードからの入力は受け付けられませんでした。

やはり、メモリ不足なのでしょうか？
何か良い方法がありましたらご教授お願いします。

[マシンスペック]
・Mebius PC-CB1-CB
・CPU:Mobile AMD Athron 4 1100MHz
・メモリ：128MB + 256MB
・HDD:30GB

外しているかも知れませんが...
シャープの仕様書を見ると
h ttp://support.sharp.co.jp/mebius/myspec/spec_search.asp
ビデオメモリーが、デフォルトだと、8MBしか設定されていないようなので、
これを、32MBにして、
kiyoshi さんの仰っていた「セーフグラフィックスモードでUbuntuを起動」
してみる。

siさんのご指摘どおり
ビデオメモリは8MBとなっておりましたので32MBに変更し
kiyoshiさんが指摘されている点について確認しました。

はい。表示されます。

はい。これも表示されます。
その後、各設定をしているCUI画面となり、
画面が真黒の状態になります。

15分ほど様子を見ていたのですが変化がないため
Ctrl-Alt-F1やCtrl-Alt-F8を実行してみましたが反応がなく、
文字列の表示もされませんでした。

また、真黒の画面が表示された直後に
Ctrl-Alt-F1やCtrl-Alt-F8を実行してみましたが反応がありませんでした。

GrubからRecoveryを選択し起動してみました。
CUIの画面で入力待ちとなり
#dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xsever-xorg
を実行し、
#exit
でGnomeを起動してみました。

結果、GUIのlogin画面が表示されたのですが
ユーザー名を入力するとフリーズしてしまいました。

Ctrl-Alt-Deleteも受け付けなかったため
リセットボタンを押し強制終了しました。

次に、CUIの画面で
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
を実行し設定を行ってみました。
#exit
を実行しGnomeを起動するとlogin画面が表示されました。

しかし、今回もユーザー名の入力でフリーズしてしまいました。

何度が設定値を変更し実行してみたのですが
ユーザー名またはパスワード入力の際にフリーズしてしまいました。

他に方法がありましたらご教授ください。

識者ではありませんが、ほぼ同じPCを使っているのでご参考まで。
PC-CB1-CDをFeisty(7.04）からGutsy、Hardyとアップグレードして使用しています。
これまで大きな問題はありませんでした。
PC-CB1-CBとの違いは、搭載可能最大メモリだけの様です。

見比べてみて問題がありそうなのは、
Section "Files"が空
Section "Module"がない
Section "Screen"のDefaultDepthが違う
SubSection "Display"にDepthがない
これはあまり関係なさそうですが、Section "DRI"がない
というところでしょうか。
私のものを参考に編集してみてはいかがでしょうか。

BIOSを確認しましたが、ビデオメモリーは8MBでした。それでも問題なく動いています。
＞VideoRam 32000
とされていますが、もちろんBIOSで設定された上での事ですね?

DefaultDepthを24にしてみましたが問題無し。
BIOSでビデオメモリーを32MBにしてみましたが問題無し。
（xorg.confにVideoRam 32000は追加されていません。）
心なしか起動が遅くなったような気が。(^^;)

Section "Module"がない
というのは見たことがないので、これが一番の問題のように思います。

loserさんが記載されている内容を/etc/X11/Xorg.confへ追加し起動してみました。
今度はLogin画面が表示される前にフリーズしてしまいました。

kiyoshiさんが以前記載されていた
#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
で解像度を800x600に設定することでLogin画面は表示されることが分かりました。

しかし、パスワード入力途中でフリーズしています。

Login画面が表示された時点でCtrl-Alt-F1でCUI画面に変更し、
CUIで操作はできることを確認できています。

Siriusさんの場合、問題は、使われているチップセットとその内蔵グラフィックチップですので、
ドライバを、vesa
Section "Device"

にしないと上手く起動しないと思います。

余談：Linuxで、Via S3 savage は鬼門らしい？

Ubuntu8.04をAlternate版でインストールしてみました。
しかし、同じようにパスワード入力の際にフリーズしてしまいます。

ダメ元で、下記オプション追加して起動してみてください。
追加するのは、
vesa acpi=off apm=off

追加のしかたは、grubステージ１のとき（escを押すとメニューを表示するよと出る画面）
escキーを押し、起動メニューを表示して、e キーを押す。
すると、起動メニューの詳細画面になるので、kernel 行に矢印キーで移動。
再度、e キーを押す。
これで、kernel 行の編集モードになるので、行末に
” vesa acpi=off apm=off”
を追加し、リターンキーさらに b キーを押し、起動する。

かつては、メーカー製のPCで、上手く起動しない場合は、上記 option を追加してました。

記載のとうりオプションを追加し起動してみました。
結果、うまくloginできました！！
本当にありがとうございます。
半分諦めかけていたので、とても嬉しいです。

３つのオプションを組み合わせて起動してみて
acpi=off
を付けることでうまくいくことが分かりました。

これまでいろいろとご教授して頂きありがとうございます。

良かったですね。
私の方ではacpiが有効です。スペック上はほぼ同じに見えるのに実はいろいろ違うのかもしれませんね。
