解像度の調整ができません

PCを変えたのですが、古いiBOOKです。
解像度だと思うのですが、液晶に対して小さく画面がつながった状態になっています。(表現が分かりにくくすみません。)
設定、モニタで変更したのですが800×600以上の設定ができません。
変更できないのでしょうか?
よろしくおねがいします。

情報が足りないようなので、使用している機器の細かな型式などを投稿してみて下さい。
また、
https://wiki.ubuntulinux.jp/UbuntuTips/Hardware/HowToChangeMonitorResolution
を参照して解像度変更できるか試してみて下さい。

上記のWikiを参照して作業しても解決しない場合、/var/log/Xorg.0.logの内容を投稿してみて下さい。

サイト参考にしたのですが表示、それ以降の対応ができませんでした。

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600        60.0*    56.0 
   640x480        60.0 
$ xrandr --newmode <ModeLine>
bash: 期待してない token `newline' のあたりにシンタックスエラー

PCの仕様ですが、2001年頃のiBOOKでOS9,02だと思います。
貰い物で詳しく聞いてなっかたので。

以降の対応したのですが、この状態です。
/var/log/xorg.o.log
bash: /var/log/xorg.o.log: No such file or directory

上記のコマンドはどこか間違っていますか。
初心者なのですみません。

iBookG3でUbuntuをインストールすると通常では800×600しか選べないということです。

あたりが問題のように思えます。
正しいhsyncを与えてやると正常に動作させられそうです。
検索した範囲では、

なども見つかりましたが、正しいモニタ情報は無く、とりあえずやってみたら動いたっぽい、という情報しかなさそうです。
正しいモニタ情報を与えないと、場合によってはハード故障を招く恐れもあるため、マニュアルやウェブの情報で正しい数値が得られないか確認してみるのがよいかと思います。
もしご友人から譲り受けたものなら、ご友人にマニュアルを保管していないか聞いてみて下さい。
また、下記を実行するとなにか情報が拾えるかも知れません。

万が一の場合は故障しても構わない、という場合は、エイやで
HorizSync    30-65
VertRefresh  50-75
で動かすのもアリかと思います。

sudo service gdm stop でコマンドし xorg.conf を作成しようとしたのですが、
コマンド後、画面が切り替わり

画面中央にはUbuntu10.04と表示

固まってしまい、以降操作できません。
最初のコマンド前に何かしておかないことがありますか?

自動生成しても、たいした内容は書かれていないはずだと思いますので、funatogawaさんが貼られたリンク先のxorg.confを参考に、手動で作ってしまうのが簡単かと思います。
ただし、下記のHorizSync, VertRefreshは確認のとれた数値ではないため、先述のようにデバイスの寿命を縮めたり、最悪故障に至るかも知れないという点に注意下さい。

お勧めとしては、まず、仕様の確認を優先させることです。
が、仕様の確認に時間をかけたくない、万が一故障しても構わない(し、似たような機種で動作実績のある設定のような)ので、試してみたいという場合は、xorg.confを書き換えてみて下さい。

端末を開いて、
