Shuttle X cube,P4 3.0GHz,2Gb dual,640G SATAのマシンに、新品で安価な表記を導入しました。

Windows XP Pro SP3 + Ubuntu8.04 + ATOK x3のdual bootで運用しています。
ディスプレイ・カードは、マザー・ボードが旧形式のためAGP仕様です。
Power Color RADEON9250SE(AGP)は、Envyで問題なく稼働しました。
画面の指定も何ら問題なく、3Dも快適に動作していました。
更なる高性能化と欲張り、表記を購入して換装したところ、Windows環境はドライバーが付属しているので、
すんなり稼働しました。
ところが、Ubuntu8.04環境では、この2日間がんばりましたが、今のところお手上げです。
800x600,640x480モードに固定、その上3Dなど夢の話です。
Nvidia Geforce6600とハード的に認識はしてくれますが、vesa modeでないとX_windosも起動しません。
$lsmod で表示させると、moduleとして一応nvidiaが導入されています。
$rmmod nvidia して、他のnvidiaドライバー・モジュールを導入しても、何とか表示されるか、真っ暗な画面です。
Xが起動しようとする場面で、ズラズラとエラーが出て、低解像モードに強制的に移行します。
また、上端の制限付きドライバーも表示されなくなました。当然、設定におけるハードウェア・ドライバーも空白です。
へたにNVIDIAのドライバーを入れると画面は真っ黒、表示もしないので、仮想端末モードしか動作しません。
/etc/X11.xorg.confについても、私の現状の知識では対応できてません。
試行した手順
1.ハードウェア・ドライバーを試しましたが、全滅です。
2.synapticで導入できるのは、全て試しましたが、全滅。
3.synapticのEnvyを試しましたが、こちらも全滅。

4.NVIDIAのホームで片っ端から、ドライバー群を試しましたが、現状は成功していません。

5.こちらに詳しく対処方法が記述されていますが、現況では私が考えつく方法を多々試しましたが無理です。

6.Ubuntu8.04を再インストールし、1~5を試しましたが、ダメ。
どこかに情報はないでしょうか。。。些細なことでもありがたいです。
ps. 追記 Geforce6600の仕様についての説明がありました。on boardのGPUは6600 GTでなく、
安価版のchipなので、何か省略されたため普通のドライバーが動作しない可能性はありそうですが。。。

その後の状況 FORSA Nvidia Geforce6600 との悪戦苦闘の日々で、寝不足です。目的達成度 50%!!
低解像度での待機状態から、仮想端末にてgdm を停止し、NVIDIAから提供されている「NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run」を実行。(NVIDIA のモジュールが作成され、カーネルに組み込まれます。)
それからgdm の再スタートコマンドを実行すると、gdmのログイン画面に移行し、X画面の解像度変更が自由にできる本来のgdmが起動するようになりました。
その後、Nvidia Geforce6600の仕様が機能する、高解像度で3Dも快適なモードになります。
今のところアプリーションの実行については、何ら問題ないように思います。
Ctrl+Alt+F1 $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop $ cd [設定プログラムをdownloadしたディレクトリー] $ sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run $ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
しかし、残念ながらPCを再起動すると、ハードウェア判定結果を表示している途中の7,8行のところで、NVIDIA moduleに既存のxorg.confが間違いであるとのエラーが表示され、ズラズラとエラーが出て、低解像モードに強制的に移行します。
800x600の画面に戻ってしまい、元の木阿弥になります。
それから、また仮想端末での操作の繰り返しを行うことになります。
xorg.confの判定ルーチンを回避する方法はないものでしょうか。。。。

全滅ですと書くだけだと、超能力で察するか同じ状況にハマったことが無いと手も足もでないので、失敗したケースのエラーログをちゃんと貼って頂いた方が良いかと思います……。

hitoさん ご指摘のとうりです。
そこでXorg.O.logのエラー箇所を貼り付けようとPCを起動したら、突如としてすんなり何事もなく立ち上がりました。
理由がわかりません。この1週間の苦労が嘘みたいです。半信半疑で、再起動させましたが不具合は見当たりません。

その後の運用中に、突如として起動画面にエラーが出て、画面が多様に切り替わり、vesa modeの
800x600画面になってしまう事象が不定期ですが発生しました。
その場合、#2の操作をしたら、復元したように見えますが、キーボード設定が変更されてしまいます。
キーボードの入力に異常(アルファベットのみ正常)が起こり、更にATOKx3がまともに動作しなくなります。
対処方法 ・・・・ これで元に戻りました。
1.ドライバーの再インストール
Ctrl+Alt+F1
$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
$ cd [設定プログラムをdownloadしたディレクトリー]
$ sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.19-pkg1.run
$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
2.キーボード設定にて修正
日本語キーボード ディフォルト+106key を選択
3.ATOK X3 for Linuxの再起動(例)
$ sudo bash /opt/atokx3/sample/setting_debian4.sh
4.IIIMF ステータス非表示ツールの設定
$ gksu gedit /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/iiimf
note: 最後の行に、以下の1行を追加
/opt/atokx3/sample/iiimf_status_hide
5.再起動したら正常に起動します。
ps. X-settingで画面をauto modeにすれば、ディスプレイに合わせた仕様で表示される様になりました。
xorg.confも編集する必要ありません。Ubuntu8.04まかせで不具合なしとなりました。

私のPC(Shuttle ST61G4 XPC)の電源は、250Wしかありません。
そのため、最近画面の明るさが変動するようになりました。
ガンマ値がランダムに変わっているような症状です。ちらつきがひどく、目が疲れます。
原因は、FORSA Nvidia Geforce6600への電源供給不足による不安定化と想定しました。
このグラフィック・ボードは、小さいのに別電源を必要とし、それも相当喰うようです。
対策として、他のコネクターから付属の電源分岐ケーブルで供給したら、安定化しました。
画面がちらつく等の症状が発生したら、Geforce6600への供給電力不足を疑って下さい。

カーネル(2.6.23)がバージョンアップしたら、#6の対処を実行しても
キーボードの一部が正常に入力できなくなりました。
Atok X3でのカナ入力に支障がでます。(特にキーボードの右側がでたらめです。)
私の環境 Ubuntu 8.04(hardy)
Linux 2.6.24-generic Gnome 2.22.3です。
対処方法(これで、正常なキー入力に復帰します。)
$ gksu gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf でキーボードの設定箇所を修正します。
