nVidia のドライバー導入がうまくいかない

こんにちは。
フォーラムの皆様にはいつもお世話になります。
さて、表題の件ですが、現在の構成ではGoogleEarth が動いてくれないため
当フォーラムやGoogleの結果を参考にnVidiaドライバーを導入することにしました。
ハードウェアの構成は以下のとおりです。
PC 三菱 Apricot cx18sd
CPU Pen4 1.8GHz
mem 1G
グラフィック nVidia GeForce2MX (AGP)
kubuntu8.10(ubuntu8.04Deskto-ja - kubuntu化 - 8.10へアップグレード)
カーネルは 2.6.27-9-generic に落としました。

まず
EnvyNG を使用し
NVIDIA 96.43.09-0ubuntu1.1
を適用しました。
すると Low-graphics mode で起動するとのメッセージ。
この時のエラーメッセージは
"Failed to initialized the NVIDIA kernel module!
Please ensure that is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system"
というものでした。
CUI にてログインし
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg"

次に
http://faq.ubuntu-world.biz/2007/09/nvidia.html
を参考に
NVIDIA-linux x86-96.43.10-pkg1.run
を試しましたがkdm再起動できません。
しかたなく
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg"

ここに↓Geforce2 MXについて記載がありました。参考にされたらと思います。

Geforce4についてなら、アップしている環境がUbuntu8.10 AOpenAX3S Max, P3 1GHz + Geforce4(AGPx4)です。
多少のアドバイスはできるかなと。。。

となり NVIDIA 関連のディレクトリは無いようです。

これは nvidia-glx-96 が正しくインストールされていないということですか?
この辺でどうも詰まってしまいます。

ご教示宜しくお願いいたします。

残念ながら、8.10ではお使いのビデオカードでは3D関連の機能はサポートされていません。

なのでハードウェアをアップグレードするか、8.04を使うかでなければいけません。8.04にするのがお勧めです。

hitoさま ご返答ありがとうございます。
NVIDIAの「レガシー」ビデオカードのサポートについては存じておりました。
nvidia-glx-legacyやnvidia-glx が8.10には対応していないだけでnvidia-glx-96 やnvidia-glx-71 はいけるものと解釈しておりました。
残念ですがハードウェアのアップグレードを考えます。
