起動画面直前でエラーが・・・

こんにちは。いつも参考にさせていただいています。
わたしは、8.04を使っているのですが、いつも通りにシャットダウンし、次に起動すると、Ubuntuの画面でゲージが満タンになりユーザーを入れる直前で画面にエラーが出てしまいました。これ以降、毎回これが起こり、しかも、肝心のエラーメッセージが□に置き換わっていて、文字化けしていて何でエラーが起きているかが分かりません。起動音も鳴らず、エラー画面で「OK」を押すと4~5回同じ画面が出ます。その後、青い画面が出ると、1~2分黒い画面(~[OK],~[OK]みたいな画面)が出て、また同じエラー画面が出て・・・が続きます。
ただ、1~2分の黒い画面の間に、テキストモードにして、ログインし、startxを打つといつもどうり(※)起動することができます。この間もエラー画面が4~5回出て・・・黒い画面(*)が出ます。ただ、この時も黒い画面の間にテキストモードでログインすると(※)の状態に戻り、しかもこれ以降は、(*)が出ることはありません。

毎回、起動時にこの操作をするのはかなり面倒ですので、通常の起動状態に戻したいわけです。

識者の方、どうかご協力ください。

使用している環境 GNOME or KDE

最後(最近)に入れたパッケージまたはビルド、インストールしたソース。

最後(最近)に行った操作(インストールや設定などシステム関連)。

startx で起動すると言うことはxdm -> gdmかkdm でコケて呼び出しエラー
を繰り返していると思うのですが、もう少し情報を頂けると何か解る人がいるかも。

状況の確認ですが

ただ、1~2分の黒い画面の間に、テキストモードにして、ログインし、startxを打つといつもどうり(※)起動することができます

[ctrl]+[alt]+[F*] と言うことですよね。
黒い画面は通常ログイン画面が現れるはずなのに真っ黒。
書いていて思いだしましたが確かxorg.confの書き換え失敗で同じ現象が起きたはず、keenmanさんの情報提供が多いほど早く解決出来るかも。

はい、そうです。
使っているのはGNOMEです。つぶれる直前に何をしたかは覚えていませんが、たしかいつもと変わらないことをしていたと思います(アップデートはしましたが・・・)

Re: 起動画面直前でエラーが・・・

デバイスの認識とXウィンドウ(っていうのかな)には得に気づくところは無かったので、GUIでのログイン画面(xdm)に的を絞れそうです。
まず有効かどうかは解りませんが起動時のCUI画面でログイン後

$ export LANG=C

で文字化けが治ればかなり情報が得られそうなのですが。
もう一つはstartx でXウィンドウではなくログイン画面を担当しているディスプレイマネージャー gdm を起動、

$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

この結果でまた、方向が絞れると思います。アップデートの失敗と言うのは可能性的に限りなく低いと思うし、、、どこが引っ掛かっているんだろ、、、
う〜ん、誰か良い提案か原因の可能性が解る人がいてくれればいいんですが。

私のレベルではほんとシステム?startxで面でのエラーが無いように見えます。gdmだけがうまく動かない?
しかしその瞬間には何らかのメッセージを出すはずなのですが何処に有るんだろうか、もう出ていて私が見落として要るだけなのかな。

これといって変更に覚えが無いとなると、後はログインが面に規格外の解像度の物を指定している可能性ぐらいですか。
スプラッシュやUスプラッシュ等の変更では表示されなくなったとよく聞くのですが。
#7だと視覚効果の関係になると思うのですが視覚効果無しになっていますよね。

現状をまとめると
・Ubuntu 8.04
・dmesg  Xorg.0.log xorg.conf は提出されている
・普通に起動していた。
・得に此れと言った設定変更やパッケージの導入は思い当たることは無、普通に使用。

・システムは起動している様だがログイン画面が出ない
・対話形式で何かの指示の表示があるが文字化けしていて内容が解らない。
・上記で[OK]を押すと「システムは起動している様だがログイン画面が出ない」に戻り以下繰り返し。

・[Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F*]でCUIでログインできる。
・/etc/init.d/gdm start  は[OK]となるがログイン画面は現れず。
・startx でGUI起動。

これも調べてみたのですが、問題ないようです。

そろそろ、切り上げ時のような気がします。
このままでも、面倒くさいだけで一応使えるのでこのまま頑張ります。
