I'm sorry that I can't use Japanese here, my Japanese now is still very bad. :-|
I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10, and also I've activated Ibus with Anthy. Now I can type hiragana very well, but when I press Space, it doesn't change to Kanji, it is still hiragana. What should I do now? :-(

Thank you for replying, HIPPO. I've follow the steps in the site you gave me but it's still not worked with Kanji. When I type hiragana and press Space, the icon in Ibus change to Kanji but the word which I type is still hiragana, not kanji. :-s

According to this thread(https://forums.ubuntulinux.jp/viewtopic.php?id=6838), he did allocate too small a space for Ubuntu, so the same trouble as you had come up.
If you allocated under 8GB to Ubuntu, can you extend it by/more than 8GB?

post script:
After extending Ubuntu partition by 8GB, try to reinstall Ubuntu.
