$ grep 'autoconfigured'  /var/log/Xorg.0.log
$ grep '(EE)'  /var/log/Xorg.0.log
$ grep 'trident'  /var/log/Xorg.0.log

$ grep 'autoconfigured'  /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(==) Matched trident as autoconfigured driver 0

$ gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log

(デフォルトでは、/etc/X11/xorg.conf は存在しないと思います。

---/etc/X11/xorg.conf
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

(II) TRIDENT(0): <default monitor>: Using default hsync range of 31.50-37.90 kHz
(II) TRIDENT(0): <default monitor>: Using default vrefresh range of 50.00-70.00 Hz

(II) TRIDENT(0): VESA VBE OEM Product Rev: KTT 7.1 (14.27)S1
(II) Loading sub module "ddc"
(II) LoadModule: "ddc"
(II) Module "ddc" already built-in
f000:370a: 01 ILLEGAL EXTENDED X86 OPCODE!
(II) TRIDENT(0): VESA VBE DDC not supported

2. gedit

$ gedit ~/xorg.conf

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

#

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XPAi1"

  BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "Generic Monitor"
  Option "DPMS"
  HorizSync 28-51
  VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Generic Monitor"
    Device "Trident Microsystems CyberBlade XPAi1"
    SubSection "Display"
           Depth 8
           Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
           Depth 16
           Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
           Depth 24
           Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
           Depth 32
           Modes "1024x768"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

5. 保存してできた xorg.conf を /etc/X11 にコピー。

$ sudo cp ~/xorg.conf /etc/X11/

https://forums.ubuntulinux.jp/viewtopic.php?pid=43242#p43242

   (Xorg.0.log

・xorg.conf 配置前の Xorg.0.log
Xorg.0.log
Xorg.0.log

    HorizSync 28-51
    VertRefresh 43-60

「Screen」

    SubSection "Display"
           Depth 16
           Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
           Depth 24
           Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection

http://melog.info/archives/2010/05/02125010.html

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config

「xorg.conf」を分割して使用できる「/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/」フォルダのことですね。
「xorg.conf>xorg.conf.d>自動認識」という優先度かと。

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Generic Monitor"
    HorizSync 28-51
    VertRefresh 43-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Monitor "Generic Monitor"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

2. gedit

$ gedit ~/xorg.conf

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier   "Generic Monitor"
    HorizSync    28-51
    VertRefresh  43-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier  "Default Screen"
    Monitor     "Generic Monitor"
    SubSection  "Display"
        Depth  24
        Modes  "1024x768"  "800x600"  "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

5. 保存してできた xorg.conf を /etc/X11 にコピー。

$ sudo cp ~/xorg.conf /etc/X11/
