I wonder you may have to add Japanese input method, "Anthy" in a I-Bus setting.
Then, to activate I-Bus, press 半角/全角 key which is usually located below ESC key in Japanese layout keyboard.
If you are using English layout keyboard, press "~"+Alt key.
You can change those keybinding via I-Bus setting.
(By default, Shift+Space may work, too)
