＞GUIの設定ツール使っていると思うが
$sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorgで起動するツールのことでよろしいでしょうか？
もっと便利なツールがあるのでしたら、ご教示お願いします。

上記のコマンドで設定後、再起動して、メニュー＞システム＞みたいな感じで画面の解像度をクリックしても一覧に目的の解像度がありませんでした。

このコマンドでの設定は何かまずいのでしょうか？
とりあえず明日i810で再度設定し直し、その時のエラー内容を報告し、対応方法を教えていただきたいと思いますので、
まずエラーログがどこのどのファイルに出力されるか教えていただけませんでしょうか？

この設定でもＸは立ち上がるのですが、システム＞設定＞画面の解像度で設定できる解像度の欄をクリックしても1680x1050がなく、
またリフレシュレートも同様に75khzしか選択できない状態です。

調べていたのですが、

それとドライバmesaは965系のドライバが含まれていたりしますでしょうか？
