画像の解像度が８００×６００以上が選べない選べない問題です。
mouce computerから購入した新しい機種でwin7と一緒に買ったノートタイプ（ハード詳細は後で）

やったこと
ubuntu 10.04をインストール
アップデート
設定＞モニター　で８００×６００以上が選べない
パッケージマネージャでnvidia-currentを選択しインストール
（自動的にndivia-settings,dkms,fakeroot,patchも入る）
システム管理＞NVIDIA X server settingsを開くと
「You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X cofiguration file(just run 'nvidia-xconfig')」の表示あり

そして再起動すると
6つの小さな画面（6つとも同じ画面で色が違うのがある、文字が辛うじて読める小ささ）
表示は
「Ubuntuはローグラフィクスモードで起動しています」
以下の5択
1)Ⅰセッションだけローグラフィクモードで起動する
2)グラフィック効果を修正する
3)エラーのトラブルシューテイング
4)コンソールログイン画面に切り替える
5)Xをリスタートする

1)を選択するととりあえずいつもの画面の大きさでいつものデスクトップが起動
パッケージマネージャでnvidia-current,ndivia-settingsを選択しアンインストール

再起動
「Ubuntuはローグラフィックモードで起動します」　OKボタンのみでOKする
いつものデスクトップで起動される
設定＞モニター　で８００×６００以上が選べないまま

nvidia-current以外のドライバーでもためしましたが同じです。

ドライバーが対応していないのか、自動設定される設定ファイルがうまくいっていないのかと考えていますが、どうしていいかわかりません。

「ubntu Tips/ハードウェア/ハードウェア情報を調べるには」を参考にハード構成をしるします。
必要のないと思われるメモリーやネットワークなどは入れてません。
