解決法
以下の３つのファイルを編集します。
/etc/modules
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
/etc/rc.local

以下のように編集します。
/etc/modules
末尾に
axnet_cs
を追記

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
末尾に
pcnet_cs
を追記。

/etc/rc.localのexit 0の前にcardmgrを記入。
こんな感じ。

#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.

cardmgr

exit 0

上記ファイルの編集方法
GUIでの場合
Alt+F2でアプリケーション実行ダイアログを起動。
以下のように入力し実行。

gksudo gedit /etc/modules

他の2つのファイルについても同様。

端末での場合

sudo nano /etc/modules

他の2つのファイルについても同様。

2008年2月21日追記
/etc/rc.localで指定しているcardmgrコマンドはpcmcia-csパッケージに含まれています。上の記述のとおりに設定してもLANが有効にならない場合Synaptic等でこのパッケージをインストールして下さい。よく分からないときはその旨投稿して頂ければ答えます。
