質問者です。追記させていただきます。

~/.Xauthorityの所有者がrootだとログイン時に失敗することは知っています。
所有者は私であり、確認済みです。
また、 .Xauthorityを一度削除すると良いという情報を見て削除しましたが、状況は変わりませんでした。

gdmにした後についてですが、GUIログインしていたのはTTY8でした。
TTY7では相変わらずChecking battery state...で止まっているのが気になります。

そこで、lightdmをpurgeして再起動するとTTY7でGUIログインできました。
また、ubuntu-desktopやunityなど不要なものをpurgeして、現在のところ問題ありません。
これでXubuntu「みたいな」状態になりました。

最初からXubuntuにすればよいのでしょうが、私のように再インストールが面倒で
xfceを入れたがハマってしまった方の参考になれば幸いです。
